"Asian" means different people depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on. In England and Wales, the 2021 Census counted 5.5 million Asian people, 9.3% of the population, and the largest groups were Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Chinese. In the US, the Census Bureau estimates 26.8 million people identified as Asian alone or in combination in 2024, and the largest groups are Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese and Korean.

So a British Asian and an Asian American can share a label and very little else. And inside any one heritage there are different faiths, languages, regions and ideas about how much say family should have. These guides start from that.

Start here: our guides for Asian singles

The two longest guides each cover one country: how people meet, where family fits in, what to talk about early and where to get help.

Where family fits in

Family involvement in Asian dating ranges from introductions arranged by relatives to parents hearing about a partner only when it's serious, and most people sit somewhere in between. For some, family is part of dating from the first conversation. A relative suggests someone, details are swapped (in many South Asian families that's a biodata, a one-page summary of education, work and family), and the two of you meet with the families' blessing. For others, parents find out once there is something to tell.

Neither is more modern or more traditional than the other in any way that matters on a date. What matters is that you and the person you're seeing know where each other's families stand, and what you each want their role to be. An introduction you agree to freely is your choice; pressure to marry someone is not, and our UK guide explains where to get help.

Faith is part of the picture, not the whole of it

Asian heritage covers Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist and Jain families, and plenty of people with no religion at all. Two people with Pakistani parents can practise very differently; so can two people whose families are from Kerala.

It helps to describe faith by what it looks like in your week: praying five times a day, going to gurdwara on Sundays, keeping a vegetarian kitchen, fasting in Ramadan, lighting a lamp at Diwali, or simply turning up for the big days with family. That tells someone far more than a word in a box. Our guide on how to talk about religion in the first few dates has questions that open the subject gently, and interfaith relationships covers the bigger decisions.

Food, drink and planning a date

Choose the first date together, because dietary rules vary a lot: halal, vegetarian, no beef, no pork, no alcohol, or none of these. A dessert café, a walk and street food, a gallery and chai all work for most people. If you don't share dietary rules, asking what works shows more respect than guessing; our guide to food, drink and faith on dates has ideas.

Festivals worth planning around

Eid, Diwali, Vaisakhi, Lunar New Year, Christmas, Navratri, Mid-Autumn Festival: depending on the family, these can mean a week of visits, fasting or late nights cooking. Ask early which ones matter, and whether a partner would be welcome or it's still too soon. Our guide to festivals and dating covers how couples share them, and finding singles events in your community shows how festivals and community nights can be a good way to meet people.

Three conversations worth having early

Most of the friction in Asian dating comes from three things left unsaid, not from culture itself:

  1. How involved your families will be. Who hears about it, when, and how much say they get.
  2. What faith looks like day to day. Prayer, fasting, diet, festivals, and whether a partner would need to share it or respect it.
  3. The future. Children, languages at home, and whether you'd live near, or with, parents one day.

None of these needs settling on a first date. Knowing where each of you stands by the time it gets serious saves a lot of strain later.

Meeting someone through Just Singles

Just Singles is a general dating site with a focus on culture and faith: you join free, write a profile in your own words, browse for free, and pay only to read and reply to messages. We don't sort members into communities, and we don't promise filters by religion or ethnicity. How it works explains each step, and prices has the current membership costs.

Profiles are shared with partner sites in the same network, photos are reviewed, and what members write about themselves isn't checked. Scams that use family emergencies abroad, visa fees or investment tips are common; our guide to romance scams that target diaspora communities and our safety page explain the patterns and where to report them in the UK and US.

We're appointing reviewers from the communities this section covers, and we'll name them here once they're in place. None has reviewed these pages yet. How we check facts in the meantime is set out in our editorial policy.

Questions people ask

Are there free Asian dating sites?

Some sites let you join and browse free, then charge to message. Just Singles works that way: joining, building a profile and browsing are free, while reading and replying to messages needs a paid membership. Before paying anywhere, check what renews automatically and how to cancel; on Just Singles it is Settings > Billing.

Can I search only for Muslim, Hindu, Sikh or Christian singles?

We don't promise faith or ethnicity search filters. The more reliable route is to say clearly in your profile what your faith means in practice, such as prayer, fasting, diet or festivals, read other people's profiles for the same, and ask early. That tells you more than a label would.

Do I have to be Asian to join?

No. Any adult can join from 18 (21 in Alabama, Mississippi, Nebraska and Wyoming). Plenty of people want a partner who respects their heritage rather than shares it, and the guides are written to help both people in a relationship understand each other.

Does 'Asian' mean the same thing in the UK and the US?

Not quite. In Britain it usually brings South Asian families to mind first, though the census group also includes Chinese people and others. In the US it tends to bring East and Southeast Asian families to mind first. Our UK and US guides reflect that difference.

How do I avoid scams aimed at Asian singles?

Be wary of anyone who moves you off the site quickly, can never video call, or raises money, visas, a family emergency abroad or an investment. Never send money to someone you haven't met. Report scams to Report Fraud or Police Scotland in the UK, or the FTC in the US.
